1. Item description:Covox Speech Thing sound card for parallel LPT port with TDA1543 DAC
Replica
+ Box
.
1.1 Features:
This lot contains a replica of the Covox Speech Thing sound card. A special feature of this device is the presence of a digital DAC on the TDA1543 chip, which provides better sound quality compared to a conventional resistor DAC.
Also, this sound card contains a preamp at the output, to which you can directly connect headphones.
The sound card requires +5 volts of power to work, which must be supplied to the miniUSB connector, for example, from a USB port or a phone charger.
The sound card is located in a 3D-printed plastic box, see the photo. There may be slight irregularities in the body.

Additionally, this sound card has an experimental "Covox Stereo-on-1" mode, which is activated by a switch on the back of the device. But unfortunately, "Covox Stereo-on-1" is supported only by some music trackers (players) and does not work with other games or drivers yet. List of trackers for the "Covox Stereo-on-1" mode: Inertia Player, Fast Tracker, ModEdit 2.0, Modplay PRO 2.19 b.
I use Modplay PRO 2.19 b to play music in stereo.
1.2 This lot includes:

2. Wire to connect to

1.3 Description taken from Wikipedia:
"The Covox Speech Thing is an external audio device attached to the computer to output digital sound. It was composed of the most primitive 8-bit DAC using a resistor ladder and an analogue signal output, and plugged into the printer port of the PC.
One widely used variant
The Speech Thing was introduced on December 18th, 1987 by Covox, Inc of Eugene, Oregon, for about 70 USD (79.95 USD as of 1989), but as its parts were much cheaper than the complete plug, and as its design was fairly simple, people soon started to build their own variants. The plug was used long into the 1990s, as sound cards were still very expensive at that time. The plug was also quite popular in the demoscene.
An inherent problem of the design is that it requires very precise resistors. If normal parts are used, the values get shuffled, especially for quiet sounds, resulting in distortion. Nevertheless, the sound quality of the Covox plug is far superior compared to the PC speaker; even today, a self-built Covox plug is still an inexpensive way to give old computers sound capabilities."
